TRADITIONAL VALUES AND QUALITY RETURN TO THE WHITEY MUSEUM

TRADITIONAL VALUES AND QUALITY RETURN TO THE WHITEY MUSEUM

THE WHITNEY MUSEUM GETS A NEW NAME

The 1993 Whitney Biennial was the first ever to have a minority of white male artists. It was also the most reviled and criticized Biennial in recent history. In 1995 the museum returned to previous miniscule percentages of artists of color. That's why when we tried to typeset the word Whitney, we just couldn't find the letter "n."

BATTLE OF THE SEXES

GUERRILLA GIRLS BRING BATTLING AMAZONS TO THE NEW YORKER

In February of 1996, we were asked to do a spread for the first issue The New Yorker has ever done on women. We used it as an opportunity to give women everywhere a little advice backed up by some harsh realities.

DOES MOMA REALLY KNOW BEST?

In the spring of 1997, Margit Rowell, a curator at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, organized a show called "Objects of Desire: the Modern Still Life." Our supporters sent her thousands of these cards urging her to change the title to "The Objects of MOMA's Desires are Still White Males." She never relented or added more women artists or male artists of color, but every art review of the exhibition noted her discriminating ways.

GIULIANI/SAATCHI EMAIL INTERCEPTED!

Everyone was mad about the "Sensation" exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum. Mayor Rudy Giuliani screamed "blasphemy" over a painting (featuring the Virgin Mary and elephant dung) by African-British painter Chris Offilli. The art world screamed "censorship." The Guerrilla Girls exposed the real story: the lack of ethics in museums. British collector Charles Saatchi paid the museum to show his art collection, and the museum conveniently listed the sponsor of the show as "anonymous.
